Aviaries for the suburban backyard
There is no reason why a wide variety of Australian and Foreign Finches cannot be successfully kept and bred in a smaller well designed aviary. These photos show an established colourbond aviary and construction of a new pair of aviaries of similar size to expand the collection. Both aviaries employ features that make the daily routine of feeding and caring for your birds quicker and easier.
Note the front feeding dish for live food, soft food or treats that is accessible from outside the aviary. This eliminates the disturbance of birds when feeding chicks and the risk of escapees whilst entering the aviary. Water dishes can be inspected and refilled with an automatic watering system. This should also have an overflow dish and drain to stop the build up of damp areas that can harbour parasites such as worms. Having the aviary roof fully covered stops wild birds passing on diseases, reduces the effect of cats jumping on the wire and keeps the aviary floor dry in wet weather.
